For the past 60 years on the Thursday before Memorial Day 1,200 soldiers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry have placed flags on each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery.

Many of us have friends and loved ones who have given all in battle for us.  Remember to honor them this weekend. Encourage and pray for the families who are mourning their loss this weekend.

To date since the founding of our nation we’ve suffered the loss of 653,746 souls in battle.

This Memorial Day I’m remembering the compassion of President Lincoln to Mrs. Bixby:

Dear Madam,
I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

With the dreadful understanding that this is necessary:

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” – Thomas Jefferson

While you enjoy this holiday weekend, remember that it is provided to us at an unimaginable cost.
